After Surgery Woes

Updated: Nov 13, 2020

Having your dog go through surgery is tough enough. Some pawrents decide that they would bathe their dogs before surgery so that the bath lasts longer. Some even send their dogs for grooming right before, this is to ensure the nails are all cut and filed to ensure the wound would not be harmed and your dog can look its best, even after surgery. While all this is a great idea, right after surgery - because they were at the animal vet or surgical clinic, it is very likely that they will smell like the clinic or will be dirty anyway. This is not to avoid the pre-surgery bath/grooming, which is important, but just something to take note of.

Now, depending on the type of surgery, it is very likely you won't be able to shower your dog for a few days, a week or up to two weeks by order of the veterinarian. This can cause additional stress on the pawrents and the dog in question. No matter what, your dog will require the surgical area cleaned and a bath at some point in the midst of the healing process. You need to take special care of how you manoeuvre your dog, how you wash and you have to take care of the surgical incision area for sure. Depending on the post-surgery medication, your dog may be groggy, grumpy, or sleepy and definitely won't want you touching areas of the body, not just the wound area that is sore and tender to touch. After surgery pet care and grooming is very important, especially to keep the wound sanitary.

That's where professional care can come into play.
